FRANZ LACHNER (1803-1890): Catharina Cornaro.
Catalogue Number: 09U027
Reference: 777 812-2
Description: Premiered in 1841, the same year as Halévy’s La Reine de Chypre (07U007) and to the same libretto freely translated into German, Lachner’s work is a grand historical opera (recitatives, historical subject, interwoven personal and political plot lines and grand, sweeping tableaux) in the French tradition but whose musical influences are Weber, Spohr and Marschner. It dominated the operatic scene in Germany for several years. The score is notable for its predominant use of the strings, with winds - especially the clarinet and bassoon used for special effects - and brass only in dynamic high points. 2 CDs. German-English libretto. Kristiane Kaiser (soprano), Daniel Kirch, Mauro Peter (tenors), Simon Pauly (baritone), Christian Chelebiev (bass-baritone), Bavarian Radio Chorus, Munich Radio Orchestra; Ralf Weikert.
