FRANCO FACCIO (1840-1891): Amleto.
Catalogue Number: 09T005
Label: C Major
Description: Faccio was a noted conductor, especially of Verdi, both in Italy and abroad. He was also a friend from his early adulthood of Boito who provided the libretto for this opera based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet which premiered in 1865. A perceived lack of melody and the iconclastic image cultivated by its young librettist and composer condemned the work to oblivion after a restaging at La Scala in 1871 and it was not heard again complete until 2014 in Albuquerque (!). This DVD was recorded live at last year’s Bregenz Festival and was critically acclaimed, for instance, by The Telegraph: “...this marvellous opera, anticipating the musical language of later Italian verismo composers, combines lovely musical interludes with superb vocal writing...Unlike Ambroise Thomas’s French grand opera of the same name (based on an adaptation by Alexandre Dumas), this is Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Faccio’s opera is the one that should be performed, and if plans are not already afoot to bring it to the land of Shakespeare, they certainly should be”.
