Description: This was always one of Unicorn’s most treasured releases since it was the only recording of the 1941 symphony (which has “film-score Herrmann” only in its scherzo) until Koch International Classics’ 1992 recording came out. The 25-minute setting of part of Nicholas Breton’s early 17th century series of prose-poems takes us from the bitter winter month of January through to the joy and revival of May demonstrates a depth of love and respect for English literature and music which Herrmann carried with him throughout his life. Texts included. Michael Rippon (bass), Meriel Dickinson (contralto), John Amis (tenor), Gillian Humphreys (soprano), Thames Chamber Choir, National Philharmonic Orchestra; Bernard Herrmann. Original 1976 LP and 1993 CD releases.
