Description: A grant from the Delius Trust allowed a performing version of Hiawatha to finally be made. It was published by Boosey & Hawkes last year and recorded this past January. Dating from 1888, it's Delius' second orchestral work (after Florida) and predates Richard Strauss' tone-poems in its title "tone poem". Lasting a bit over 17 minutes, it inhabits a lushly melodic world not unlike that of Florida and contains a melody later to be used in Paris. The great violist Lionel Tertis was also an inveterate transcriber (see later in this catalogue for his version of Elgar's Cello Concerto), although Delius' use of the cello's highest registers, particularly in the 1915 Double Concerto, made it easier on him. Philippe Graffin (violin), Sarah-Jane Bradley (viola), BBC Concert Orchestra; David Lloyd-Jones.
