Description: Flemish opera is among the rarest of specimens in Collector’s World, so this 46-minute group of excerpts from Mortelmans’ only opera is good to have. Date of composition is unknown but the play it was based on was written in 1900 and the opera’s only performance took place in 1920. Also striking is the big, dramatic, 11-minute orchestral song Ellen of 1895. Wagner is a main influence and the composer’s rich orchestration illuminates the tragic story of impossible love set among fishermen. De Boeck was better-known as an opera composer, producing five of them, two of which give us the pair of arias excerpted here. Flemish-English texts. Liesbeth Devos (soprano), Peter Gijsbertsen (tenor), Werner van Mechelen (bass-baritone), Württemberg Philharmonie Reutlingen; Dirk Vermeulen.
