Description: The prolific Cooman continues to greatly expand and enhance the repertory of beautifully written, characterful voluntaries and short organ pieces for a variety of occasions. As on previous volumes, he draws on traditional materials (carols, hymns, plainchant) and forms, all reworked in his own tonal, approachable idiom, variously inflected by the modes and harmonic conventions from the history of organ music. The music is variously grand and ceremonial (Exordium, Cortège, the fantasy on Veni Creator Spiritus), joyously or tenderly prayerful (hymn fantasies and preludes), and intimate and gentle (in memoriam and tribute occasional pieces). Erik Simmons (organ of Cathédral Notre-Dame, Saint-Omer, France).
