Format: SACD hybrid
Description: Gubaidulina has contributed a significant number of chamber works for unusual, sonorously effective instrumental combinations to the repertory, and Repentance and Sotto voce, the latter one of her most recent chamber works, here receiving its world premiere recording, are fine examples of her unique, richly poetic personal idiom. In both works, multiple guitars provide a range of textures and harmonic possibilities, sometimes employing astonishingly innovative playing techniques, that suggest a far larger ensemble, while the rich, dark sonorities of the bowed instruments are used in eloquently expressive dialogue. The much earlier, jazz-influenced piano sonata, with its experiments in extended sonorities, provides an interesting contrast to the equally unconventional but less aggressively modernistic chamber pieces. Jacob Kellermann, Lucas Brar, Franz Halász (guitars), Hariold Schilchtig (viola), Wen-Sinn Yang (cello), Philipp Stubenrauch (double bass), Débora Halász (piano).
