Description: The newest Hyperion concerto series opens with early, middle and late concertos from amongst Dussek's 18 for his own instrument. It's to be hoped that more will follow due to Dussek's importance in the history of this genre; as the writer of the Dussek article in "The New Grove" puts it, "... much of Dussek's music resembles that of other composers. Most often, however, these composers are later than Dussek, and such resemblances show him to have been very much ahead of his time." Thus, the seven-part schema of opening movements in Classical piano concertos attributed to Mozart appears in the first concerto here (published in 1783) which dates from two years before the first Mozart concertos to be published. The 1810 Op. 70 contains elements later to be found in Weber, Field, Chopin, Hummmel, Clara and Robert Schumann while the middle concerto here, from 1795, is possibly the first piano concerto to open with a Larghetto before segueing into the main Allegro maestoso. None are otherwise currently available. Ulster Orchestra; Howard Shelley (piano).
