Description: The 1989 No. 3 is in a single-movement, five-section form lasting 31 minutes. Its brassy brilliance and energy is derived from the Trumpet Concerto and the only-slightly earlier Fourth Symphony. From the following year, the two linked movements of No. 4 balance melodic flights and florid runs amidst virtuosic orchestral material with an adagio second movement in the composer's spare, cold, birdcall-riven style.
