Description: These works display Castro-Robinson's penchant for vivid, sonically inventive orchestral textures and impressively massive forms. Releasing the Angel serves as a metaphor for her style, the cello soloist representing the sculptural form liberated from the imposing blocks of orchestral sound. Here, the granitic mass is illuminated by arabesques of cello melody; in Other Echoes the lively decoration is that of birdsong. Although the composer makes use of a wide palette of contemporary techniques, and underlying sense of tonal movement is more often present than not, frequently accompanied by propulsive rhythmic drive. This is especially apparent in the tutti sections of Peregrinations, which alternate with very romantic-sounding solo piano material and dialogue between piano and solo violin. These Arms is a lively evocation of childhood, reveling in the fact that children haven't yet learnt to be wary of contemporary music, while incorporating the essential innocence and boisterousness of children's songs and folksongs. Len Dances is a tribute to New Zealand artist Len Lye, and allows the composer free rein to indulge in exotic sounds, raucous popular dances, and all manner of eccentric musical ebullience. New Zealand Symphony Orchestra; Kenneth Young.
