GUNNAR BERG (1909-1989): Ar-Goat for 2 Guitars, Triedra for Recorder, 9 Duos for Recorder and Guitar, Melos for Guitar.
Catalogue Number: 08L111
Description: Berg was a pioneering modernist in Danish music, a member of Messiaen's circle and an acquaintance of Boulez, Stockhausen and Cage. His music from the 1950s, such as the recorder works here, firmly embrace serialism. These are lively, agile dodecaphonic works, with techniques of inversions, mirroring and transposition alongside Messiaen's modes of limited transposition placing them firmly in the Darmstadt idiom of the time. The composer's interest in the guitar came later, and here he found inspiration in the instrument's facility for quarter-tones and harmonics which he used exhaustively and as integral components of the music's harmonic and timbral structure, to the extent that sections of the large-scale Melos (1979) sound like ingenious studies in quarter-tone technique for the instrument. Per Dybro Sørensen (guitar), Bolette Roed (recorder), Michael Norman (second guitar).
