Description: The Commentaries are based on Sári's Koestler opera of 1999-2000, encapsulating the larger work in a mosaic of (mostly) re-ordered fragments. Some sections retain the narrative of the original scenes, with instrumental substitutions for the vocal parts, while others borrow freely from different sections of the opera. The composer's language incorporates dodecaphony, which provides the basis for some striking, Bergian themes, in an harmonic environment nevertheless not so very far removed from Shostakovich at times. The cimbalon concerto - the title refers to the Leonid meteor shower - sets the distinctive sound of the solo instrument, an obvious acoustical analogy to vivid flashes and streams of light, against a relatively subdued orchestral accompaniment, based in dodecaphonic methods but employing Bartókian modal inflections and atmospheric orchestration. This is even more evident in the homage to Bartók, Zenith, with its very audible, though not often explicitly referential, links to the soundworld of the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste. Ildikó Vékony (cimbalom), MR Symphony Orchestra; László Kovács, János Kovács (Zenith).
