Description: Neo-classicism is the main element in these short, pithy four-movement works and hits of jazz syncopations are present in the 1952 first clarinet sonata. After 1963, Etler began experimenting with serial composition and atonality and the final work, the second sonata of 1969, the longest of the batch at just over 21 minutes, is complex and difficult in both rhythm and counterpoint. Kenneth White (clarinet), Mary Jo Cox (piano), Joanna Cowan White (flute), Roger Rehm (oboe), MaryBeth Minnis (bassoon), Bruce Bonnell (horn), Seanad Dunigan Chang (viola).
