Description: After a hiatus of five years and seven months, during which time the pianist on this recording worked on editing and publishing Mendelssohn's complete songs (it came out last October through Bärenreiter), we have the fourth volume. This volume and the fifth (yet to come) contain almost exclusively world premiere recordings, showing that while much of Mendelssohn's song œuvre, so gratefully written for the voice, so light and easy on the ear, plumbed no great emotional depths or compositional depth, to be sure, but were sparkling little jewels of their kind, there is also a significant number of works where the composer experimented with novel forms and highly expressive harmonies which go well beyond the graceful melodies, limpid textures and strophic forms of the majority of this material. German-English texts. Katherine Broderick, Hanna Morrison (sopranos), Anna Grevelius (mezzo), Finnur Bjarnason (tenor), Stephan Loges (baritone), Eugene Asti (piano).
