CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACH (1714-1788): Flute Concertos, Vol. 2 - in A Minor, Wq 166, in D, Wq 13 and in A, Wq 168.
Catalogue Number: 08L030
Description: No, you didn't miss Vol. 1 - it's still not available in the U.S. (if it's even in print). All six of his flute concertos exist in versions for keyboard so they've all been recorded in the BIS series, but they were meant for flute and should be heard in their original form. The A major work is particularly striking for the depths of its slow movement's despondency. On the other hand, the D major (earlier than 1744 when its keyboard version was made and just rediscovered in the Singakademie archive plundered by the Red Army) couldn't be sunnier and regular - just like Frederick the Great wanted (although its slow movement has its emotional issues too). Arte dei Suonatori; Alexis Kossenko (flute).
