JOSEPH BODIN DE BOISMORTIER (1689-1755): Daphnis et Chloé.

Description: As, in the wake of the cultural decline of the court of the Sun King, demand for the aria became superseded by demand for the ariette, the cantata by the cantatille, so the tragédie lyrique was superceded by smaller-scale opéra-ballets like this, the third, last and most successful of Boismortier's (1747). Lasting a comparatively taut 100 minutes, in a prologue and three acts, this realization of the idealized amour champêtre (borrowed originally from Longus) offers many gracious airs, often with the most ingenious accompaniments (four flutes, two oboes and three bassoons are the busy wind elements to go with solos from the strings) interspersed with several characteristic dances and a final Chaconne. 2 CDs. French-English libretto. Gaëlle Méchaly (soprano), François-Nicolas Geslot (high tenor), Till Fechner (bass), Le Concert Spirituel; Hervé Niquet.
