ARNOLD BAX (1883-1953): Cello Sonata, FREDERICK DELIUS (1862-1934): Violin Sonata No. 3 (transcr. Lionel Handy), JOHN IRELAND (1879-1962): Cello Sonata in G Minor.
Catalogue Number: 07T041
Description: Only the third modern recording of Bax’s Celtic-inspired, restlessly emotional and tragic sonata of 1923. Lionel Tertis transcribed the Delius for viola so there’s a precedent for Handy’s and the cellist gives his reasoning for it in the notes while the notewriter finds that the cello “brings out the autumnal quality” of the sonata. These days, the Ireland is practically ubiquitous. Over to you, cello fanciers... Lionel Handy (cello), Jennifer Hughes (piano).
