SIMON LAKS (1901-1983): String Quartet No. 4, Piano Quintet “on Popular Polish Themes”, Divertimento for Violin, Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano, Concertino for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon, Sonatina for Piano, Passacaille for Clarinet and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 07T009
Reference: CHAN 10983
Description: Except for the 1927 Sonatina these are post-Auschwitz-survival pieces dating as late as the Divertimento and the arrangement of the String Quartet No. 3 on Polish themes for piano quintet, both from 1967, the year he stopped composing. But his wartime experiences didn’t change Laks’ essential style: the bright and sometimes angular neo-classicism of the Parisian scene of the 1920s and 1930s also favored by his Polish compatriot and friend Alexander Tansman. ARC Ensemble with Sarah Jeffrey (oboe) and Frank Morelli (bassoon).
