Description: The key to Spinosa's eclectic idiom is perhaps her unusually wide experience of composing scores to accompany silent films, including festival presentations of a number of very well known classic examples of the genre. Drawing on a wide range of styles, and generally sounding overall like a collage of mostly modernistic devices, they strongly suggest narrative and image, and the rapid transition between 'scenes'. For example, in Contro l'uomo seduto, after Gabriel García Marquéz' "Diatribe of love against a seated man", a tavern piano suddenly appears out of nowhere, like an angrily recalled episode from the memory of the wife berating her husband about their decayed marriage. The pieces contain many such moments of vivid aural cinematography. Genesi 19, the Biblical account of the depravity and destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah could easily be a film score suite (and is the most tonal work here, aside from the piano miniature Ruhig in memory of the composer's father). Stable, insistent rhythms emerge to lend force and structure to the disparate textures of "The Salamander Tree", with its opposition of disordered activity and rigid stasis, or to provide a sense of obsession to the Holocaust remembrance piece Never Forget. Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali; Pietro Mianiti, Alessandro Calcagnile, PIANOx2, József Balog (piano), Accord Quartet, Rephael Negri (violin), Jean-Claude Dodin (baritone sax), Daniel Kientzy (contrabass sax), New MADE Ensemble.
