SILVIA COLASANTI (b.1975): Requiem “They Shall Clasp a Comet in Their Fists” for Soloists, Choir and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 06T069
Description: Colasanti's Requiem was written in memory of the victims of the earthquake in central Italy in 2016, which killed 300, injured many more, and displaced thousands. In the tradition of many modern requiems written to illuminate a particular message, this work interpolates other material into settings of sections of the Latin Missa pro defunctis. The canonical text is assigned to the choir and orchestra, and forms a fine, not especially unconventional Requiem setting, largely tonal though with some modern discordant harmony, hints of early church music here and there and a recurring effect of the rattling of stones which eerily suggests subsiding earth and rubble in the aftermath of the catastrophe. Dovetailed into the Mass are the fragile, lamenting poetic texts of Mariangela Gualtieri, delivered by the poet against a restrained, intimate instrumental accompaniment. An emotionally powerful and moving work, perfectly calibrated to its subject matter and eloquent in its progression from mourning to radiant consolation. Mariangela Gualtieri (reciter), Monica Bacelli (mezzo), Massimiliano Pitocco (bandoneon), Ensemble Vocale Continuum, Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento; Maxime Pascal.
