Description: Solo violinist as well as leader of a prominent string quartet, Aulin’s fame in Sweden depended mostly on his third concerto of 1896 (once available on a Musica Sveciae CD), an elegant and virtuosic work with a rich melodic stream of dramatic and lyrical quality not far from Bruch. The only prior recordings of the other two works were thanks to Sterling 15 years ago. No. 2 dates from 1893 and its outer movements' melodies display a Romantic melancholy with somewhat "Nordic" melodies tinged with a Slavic flavor. The 1891 Concert Piece, dedicated to Aulin's teacher Émile Sauret, is fanciful and virtuosic in the manner of the Franco-Belgian violin school. Ulf Wallin (violin), Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra; Andrew Manze.
