Description: A Jewish fugitive from Vienna in 1938, Arlen became a music critic for the Los Angeles Times from 1952-80 and later founded the music department at Loyola Marymount University. A feature article on Gramophone's website two months ago contains an interview with Arlen and notes that this recording was produced by Michael Haas, who was behind Decca's Entartete Musik series a couple of decades ago. As the writer put it, "what really holds these songs together is their wistful eloquence, poised on a fault-line between the open-handed accessibility of mid-20th Americanism and the darker, more internalised processes of pre-war mittel-Europe." Texts included - all but two of the songs are in English. 2 CDs. Rebecca Nelsen (soprano), Christian Immler (baritone), Danny Driver (piano).
