Description: These works are related by the composers' attempts to incorporate the rhythms and inflections of speech into the musical vocabulary of the current avant garde - a logical enough extension of Schoenberg's 100-year old experiments in Sprechgesang. Harvey's piece is for oboe and ensemble (with some vocalization from ensemble members), incorporating a sustained and frankly gorgeous soliloquy for cor anglais, amidst the speech effects passed around in garrulous fragments among the ensemble. The Furrer is a breathless monologue for female voice, amplified, so to speak, by the 'speaking' gestures of the instruments. Aperghis' Babil is a clarinet concerto, with a tense but consistent dialogue between soloist and ensemble. Despite the microtonal inflections and extended playing techniques, Babil contains many of the accustomed gestures of the traditional concerto, though expressed in a very modern idiom. Chin's piece is the most vocally oriented; a satirical investigation of the quirks and idiosyncrasies of western concert singing, with voices imitating instruments and vice versa, the resulting encyclopaedia of singing styles sounding like a demented version of Stockhausen's Stimmung, with musical 'found objects' from every period of music history and the traditions of other cultures. No texts. Peter Veale (oboe, cor anglais), Salome Kammer (voice), Carl Rosman (Clarinet), Anu Komsi, Piia Komsi (sopranos), David Cordier (countertenor), musikFabrik; Peter Rundel, Beat Furrer, Sian Edwards, Stefan Asbury.
