ROBERT DE ROOS (1907-1976): String Quartets Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 8 "Quartettino".

Description: This Dutch composer wrote eight string quartets so we have half of them here. Nos. 2 and 3 date from 1942 and 1944-45 and, while both are quite tonal they are rather different in character. No. 2 lasts 12 minutes but manages to produce several attractive melodies which are pithily used. The Third is a 32-minute work in four movements written during Holland's "famine winter" under Nazi occupation, but you'd never guess it from the unruffled, almost genial quality of its lyrical movements and the relaxed working-out of the fugal first section of its finale. No. 5 (1951) has a very brief first movement and two more fugal ones and the whole thing lasts just over eleven minutes. At the end of his career, de Roos experimented with serialism and the eight-minute Quartettino of 1971 is a stormy and passionate piece which barely pays lip service to that system. Utrecht String Quartet.
