CARL AMAND MANGOLD (1813-1889): Abraham.
Catalogue Number: 06L057
Reference: CHR 77326
Description: This 1859 oratorio uses Biblical texts, chosen and adapted by the composer. Isaac is only the end of the work; before that, we have Abraham and Lot splitting up, Hagar, Sarah and Abraham's heir problem and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Most of the work is done by the chorus - especially when you consider that Jehovah is a double chorus! The style is in the Mendelssohn-Schumann axis and the work should appeal to any collectors of German Romanticism. 2 CDs. German-English texts. Gilles Cachemaille (baritone), Mechtild Georg (alto), Michael Ruhr (boy soprano), Darmstadt Concert Choir, Darmstadt Philharmonic Orchestra; Wolfgang Seeliger. Orignal 1993 release.
