ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678-1741): Armida al campo d'Egitto, RV 699.
Catalogue Number: 06L026
Reference: OP 30492
Description: Vivaldi's last Venetian premiere (1718) lost its second act somewhere in the 18th century, making both performance and recording problematic. Conductor Alessandrini and scholar Frédéric Deleméa have restored Act II as a pasticcio, using three existing arias preserved elsewhere and borrowing the rest from other Vivaldi operas where their poetic meter and musical character correspond to those in the libretto (the choruses are new inventions). Now we can get a reasonable idea of the whole work whose most striking aspect may be its use almost throughout of only strings (one aria in Act III calls for two hunting horns and bassoon), making Vivaldi's original and ingenious scoring all the more amazing. 3 CDs for the price of 2. Italian-English libretto. Sara Mingardo (contralto), Martín Oro (countertenor), Marina Comparato, Romina Basso (mezzos), Furio Zanasi (baritone), Concerto Italiano; Rinaldo Alessandrini.
