ALAN HOVHANESS (1911-2000): Symphonies No. 7 "Nanga Parvat", Op. 178, No. 14 "Ararat", Op. 194 and No. 23 "Ani", Op. 249.

Description: Nanga Parvat (1959) depicts the sublime topography or a Kashmiri mountain while Ararat (1960) does the same for its peak; both these works are often difficult, wild and full of polymodality, sound clusters and prominent percussion. Ani (1972) and written for a high school band, is longer than both the others put together and is softer in focus as it depicts a ruined Armenian city with a gamelan-like second movement and an elegiac finale ending in a fugue.
