Description: The leading Serbian composer of his day wrote almost exclusively for voice(s) and solo piano. His Balkan Dances of 1926 were performed by Rubinstein among other noted pianists and one musicologist ranked them in importance in East European piano music with Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, Stravinsky's Petrushka suite and Martinu's Esquisses. Much is either folk-based or original but folk-inspired; the Preludes and Variations are very atmospheric and compelling pieces which have almost no truck with folk music while the Sonatinas have their color but not much else. The pedagogical pieces are as folk-infused as the collections of dances and songs. Radmila Stojanovic-Kiriluk (piano).
