Description: Lidström's Fantasy is in the tradition of the many operatic arrangements, paraphrases, transcriptions and fantasias of the nineteenth century, written by instrumental virtuosi in order to co-opt the best and most popular tunes of the time into their own repertories. Accordingly, Lidström presents eleven of the universally beloved arias from Rigoletto with Verdi's orchestration largely respected, but the vocal parts rendered into cello solos with the kind of elaborations and double-stopping and ornamentation that were the stock in trade of the travelling virtuoso during the heyday of the genre. He provides his own cadenzas and linking material (the arias are written into a continuous 30-minute suite that has nothing to do with the operatic narrative), and gives solos to select members of the orchestra borrowed from the styles and content of Lisztian and Paganinesque paraphrases. Beautifully done by a master cellist, so if you're a fan of traditional incarnations of this sort of thing then this will give much pleasure. Mats Lidström (cello), Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra; Vladimir Ashkenazy.
