JAROMÍR WEINBERGER (1896-1967): Wallenstein.

Description: This opera, based on Schiller’s narrative poem, had only four performanes in Vienna in late 1937 - not surprising given that it was by a Czech Jew and the Anschluss was only four months off. Its stylistic heterogeneity is captured by this excerpt from a review on “bachtrack.com”: “Grim scene-setting with ominous martial music gives way with ease to oom-pah bands and Slavic-inflected melodic lyricism; ethereal moments bordering on atonality dissolve into plush Korngoldian statements with heart firmly on sleeve. For the Max and Thekla sub-plot Weinberger transitions into full-blown operetta mode”. 2 CDs. German-English libretto. Roman Trekel (baritone), Martina Welschenbach (soprano), Ralf Lukas (baritone), Daniel Kirch (tenor), Wiener Singakademie, Vienna Radio Symphpony Orchestra; Cornelius Meister.
