Description: This new release provides the text and orchestration of the 1833 performance which Mendelssohn conducted at the Rhine Music Festival in Düsseldorf. The German translation was done by Karl Bredenstein in 1826 and Mendelssohn did significant source research, adding an aria and several recitatives which were not in the original printed score he sourced in London. This is Handel that even Handel-haters might like; the ten-minute overture is as thrilling and entertaining as that most Handelian overture of Beethoven's: The Consecration of the House and the rest of the score follows along in similar affect and style. 2 CDs. German-English texts. Monika Frimmer, Veronika Winter (sopranos), Heike Grötzinger (alto), Hans Jörg Mammel (tenor), Ekkehard Abele, Gregor Finke (basses), Rheinische Kantorei, Das Kleine Konzert; Hermann Max.
