Description: Engaging, thoroughly tonal miniatures by a prolific composer with a distinguished academic career, noted for his choral compositions. Meetings - humorous little sketches of the proceedings in faculty meetings - set the tone for the disc, ending with a jolly rag, while the finale of the inventively scored Märchenbilder has a march constantly breaking down in confusion. The genial, lively variations on a popular folk dance collected by Kodaly puts the theme through a variety of characters including a waltz and a concluding fugue. The rollicking Platzkonzert is 17 minutes of pure fun, a musical joke to rival or even outdo Mozart's. Chromatic harmonica, harpsichord and wind trio, for goodness' sake - a perfect comic troupe performing skits on marches for band and concerts in the park bandstand and music composed for the use of - and best left to - over-serious amateurs in their living rooms. The raucous, mock-sinister Danses macabres suggest Mediæval illustrations which, once you’ve noticed the extraordinary expressions on the participants' faces, you can no longer take seriously, brought to comedic life by Monty Python's animator, Terry Gilliam. Members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, NoPhilBrass and other performers.
