Description: A matter of months separate the first two violin sonatas (1915) but the musical styles they explore are poles apart. The First is an 18-minute work in four movements in a late Romantic vein. The fiercely Modernist Second, though, inhabits the realm of Expressionist angst shared by Schoenberg’s music of the period while the brief, single‐movement Third dates from around 15 years later and is characterized by a harsh, almost alienated lyricism, and by many references to the Jewish culture that became explicit in the 1929 Hebraic Fantasy. The three flute pieces, written during the 1950s, return to melodic charm and a mood of peaceful serenity. Francesco Parrino (violin), Stefano Parrino (flute), Maud Renier (piano).
