Description: Stevens remained committed to communication and tradition and the elements of his mature style - concision (most works developing out of motifs introduced at the very beginning), warmth (often with cantabile melody) and the love of counterpoint and variation - are present in these works composed between 1950 and 1954. The other third of the disc is given over to three of Rawsthorne's shorter pieces which are rather more lyrical than Stevens. Previously unreleased recordings. James Gibb (piano).
