Description: The final disc of this series brings three more of Valen's early to middle period tone poems (Churchyard of 1934 being his most performed work), his final symphony of 1949 (whose final chaconne is a nod to Brahms) and his final work, the 1950 piano concerto, a nine-minute work of pristine Classical clarity. Everything is in his expressive, atonal contrapuntal style and collectors of Scandinavian music will note an essence which carries across any number of tonal late 19th and early 20th century composers from that area to Valen's music as well. Einar Henning Smebye (piano), Stavanger Symphony Orchestra; Christian Eggen.
