Description: This collection is centred on the Pasternak song cycle, a substantial work of considerable drama and lyrical flow. As with the other works here, there is an unmistakable core of tonality, especially evident in the vocal work; modernistic touches such as voiced multiphonics and glissandi for the wind and brass instruments in the other pieces are kept to a minimum and used only to heighten the sense of instrumental color; otherwise the writing is conventional. The trombone sonata is finely proportioned and tightly structured, in common with the trio, which is in classical three-movement form, with clearly defined thematic relationships and recapitulation that renders the argument readily assimilable. Throughout there is a sense of strong characterisation; the title of the piano and percussion work hints at a general preoccupation with music of character and personality.
