Description: Harbison acknowledges the influence of Haydn on his trio, and indeed within the composer's recognisable style, not quite classifiable according to any doctrine, one is aware of the quirky lightness of touch and ambiguity which characterise Haydn's essays in the form. All these works share something of this breezy quality in fact; the Gatsby Etudes, spun off from Harbison's opera, are great fun, 1999's view of 1899's parlour piano pieces. The Notebooks pay tribute to the composer's own instrument in rigorous and demanding pieces that are more than simply etudes, and the suite is a succinct and precise soliloquy modelled on baroque forms, introspective and personal, almost private in mood. Amelia Piano Trio, Steven Tenenbom, Ida Kavafian, Anthea Kreston, John Harbison (violas).
