Description: Written between 1832 and 1838, Bennett's concertos, unlike the vast majority of piano concertos of the period, are not virtuosic fluff vehicles. Although there is a superficial similarity to Mendelssohn, Bennett's style derives from Mozart and Beethoven via the London Piano School (his teacher, Cipriani Potter, was himself a student of Beethoven). The Caprice, an attractive 13-minute addition to the single-movement repertoire, dates from 1838. Malcolm Binns (piano), Philharmonia Orchestra; Nicholas Braithwaite. Original 1990 Lyrita recording and release.
