JEAN PAUL EGIDE MARTINI (1741-1816): Messe de Requiem pour la Pompe funèbre de Louis XVI et de Marie Antoinette, CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD GLUCK (1714-1787): De Profundis.
Catalogue Number: 03S028
Reference: CHR 77413
Description: This requiem was first performed in the Cathedral of Saint Denis on January 21, 1816, the anniversary of the execution of Louis and Marie. And who better to compose it than the man who was appointed superintendant of the King’s music in late 1788, just months before the Revolution? Even though Cherubini’s requiem, which was performed at the same commemorative site a year later, has become famous while Martini’s sank from sight, there is a lot to like in the latter work. Martini was no slouch in whipping up drama and colorful orchestration (dig that tam-tam [gong] at a few important moments). If you’re into the genre and the period, this won’t disappoint. Corinna Schreiter (soprano), Martin Platz (tenor), Markus Simon (bass), Musica Franconia Festival Choir, La Banda; Wolfgang Riedelbauch.
