Description: Both Bush and Reizenstein were composers firmly wedded to tonality and both of these sonatas come from 1945 (the only other recording of the latter being a 42-year-old one last released on the defunct Continuum label). Reizenstein’s is a full-size, three-movement work of 24 minutes which opens dark and brooding but quickly establishes a mood of passionate intensity which is founded constantly changing rfythms and the tension between G sharp minor and major; there is no slow movement, its place taken by a rather Shostakovichian scherzo. Bush gives us a single-movement piece of just over 18 minutes which never establishes a key until the very last note and which foregrounds its attractive melodic ideas agains constantly shifting chromatic progressions.
