GOFFREDO PETRASSI (1904-2003): Piano Concerto, Flute Concerto, La follia di Orlando - Suite from the Ballet.

Description: The 32-minute piano concerto of 1936-39 is a neo-classical piece of taut nervous tension and motoric rhythms in its first movement (more than a hint of Prokofiev here) and has a slow movement reminiscent of Bártokian "night music" but with some truly lovely lyricism towards the end while the fast movement restores the energy of the first. The 20-minute ballet suite (1942-43) is in similar neo-classical style with plenty of lyrical moments as well but the 1960 flute concerto, let's face it, is something only a Darmstadt mother could love.
