Description: The 30 songs (and 85 min.) of “The Spring of Singing”, put together between 1855-1863 are asssociated Raff’s 1859 marriage. Half deal with the various aspects of love and the other half with other Romantic subjects. Maria (1872 and much shorter - 12 songs lasting half an hour) uses selections from the same anthology used by Schumann for his Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart, Op. 135 where the background of the texts are the religious wars and battles over succession in 16th century England and Scotland. The excellent notes are particularly good in the latter cycle, providing historical context where possible. No texts (supposedly available on the Divox website which doesn’t have them and says “new webiste coming soon”...).
