Description: Half of the famous Vronsky & Babin piano duo, Babin wrote his concerto in 1956, a neo-baroque/neo-classical work of 26 minutes and four movements which comes closest to the Gallic insouciance of Françaix or Poulenc its motoric second movement while the brief slow movement is a calm and unruffled night lakescape; the outer ones are heavier, more in the Slavic style of Stravinsky or Prokofiev with just a hint of the sardonic Shostakovich. The coupling may be Bartók but at least it’s rarely recorded Bartók - the 1940 orchestration of the 1937 sonata for two pianos and percussion. Piano Duo Genova & Dimitrov, Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra; Yordan Kamdzhalov.
