Description: The Laks pieces aren’t first recordings but neither is currently available and it‘s convenient to have them together, the neo-baroque Sinfonietta of 1936 a bright and bracing 16 minutes which hardly fits with the dark days of the time. But then Laks was a French Jew and not a German one and he could hardly have dreamed that he would end up an Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor, an experience which informs but does not greatly color the 21-minute symphony of 1964, still neo-classical but with a wider emotional range. Jarnach’s piece is an arrangement of a 1952 work for string quartet whose 14 minutes have a melancholy quality with a hint of Mahlerian moods in its intimate lyricism/ NFM Leoplodinum Chamber Orchestra; Hartmut Rohde.
