Description: The rarity here is 1950-51's Noche oscura, a 19-minute cantata which sets the poem by the 16th-century Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross, as one musicologist put it, "covered in a twelve-tone varnish" but treated in unorthodox manner and well conveying the poet's mixture of mystical exaltation and erotic mysticism. Coro di morti, very evocative of night and darkness with the choral writing spaning a stylistic gulf from Monteverdi to modern atonalism, and the Inni Sacri, in neo-baroque style, were recently offered along with the Partita (four recordings of this now!) on Naxos (04O009 - April 2013). Latin, Spanish, Italian-English texts. Giorgio Berrugi (tenor), Vasily Ladyuk (baritone), Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Regio Torino; Gianandrea Noseda.
