Description: These beautifully crafted, thoroughly tonal chamber works share a genuine romantic sensibility and emotionally communicative spir it. The lively Daniel's Razor (written, obviously, for the present ensemble) is less frivolous than the title might suggest; an elegant divertimento in one movement, for the forces of the popular Dohnanyi Sextet. The clarinet quintet and the recent horn quintet are likewise succinct single span works, encompassing a variety of moods and atmosphere, very much in the British pastoral tradition. The Terzetto has something of the elegant wit of Poulenc, with a slow movement with great depth of feeling, also a characteristic of the cello and piano Elegy. Tarn Hows and the organ quartet incorporate the composer's own instrument in effective, unusual chamber music textures; both are imbued with a strong sense of place, and a very English atmosphere; the spirit of Elgar is never far distant, especially in the noble, sweeping opening of the quartet.
