Description: Far from being the throw-away bits of salon music which their titles might suggest, these piano pieces of Thuille were apparently means of experimenting formally and stylistically. A close friend of Richard Strauss, Thuille's roguish Humoreske suggests the latter's later Till Eulenspiegel in character while the Ständchen anticipates the melancholic waltz in Rosenkavalier. The largest piece here, the ten-minute Threnodie of 1905, in memory of a favorite friend and former student, alternates spacious and somber periods with wild outbursts of emotion. Plenty to get your teeth into; no trifles here! Ulrich Urban (piano).
