Description: The Joycean, hugely literary and, let's face it, difficult, German writer's Foundation has been very active in promoting his work since his death, including commissions for short works based on his writings for highly economical forces, some of which are to be heard on this CD. Reudenbach's piece incorporates a tape part compiled from readings of Schmidt, and the Scartazzini, Platz, Kaul, Desi and Beinke all set his texts for the unusual timbre of a counter-tenor (a requirement of the Schmidt Stiftung's commissions), with a variety of accompaniments, from the relatively conventional elaborately ornamented melodic flute line of the Platz to the abrasive textures, including electronics, of the Kaul. Lohse alternates 16 recited fragments of Schmidt's texts with tiny, aphoristic ensemble commentaries. Both this and the Verbugt are the most extended pieces here, the latter also divided into (rather longer) movements for different instrumental groupings, only three of the seven with a sung text and all fragmentary, dissonant and argumentative, reflecting the character of the man behind the whole exercise. German texts. Denis Lakey (countertenor), oh ton-ensemble; Benjamin Lang.
