Description: Although the sonata, representing work over much of the composer's life-span and finished only in 1905, has been well-represented in recording, the rest of his output has been much less so (except for his transcription of Glinka's song The Lark). Combining lyricism with glittering technical demands and based on Chopin and Liszt, Balakirev's short, genre-pieces are well worth hearing again, played by Hyperion's newest young piano star whom we've only heard in York Bowen and CPE Bach until now (he's going to do the complete Benjamin Dale soon!). Danny Driver (piano).
