Description: The 1998 Rhapsody is a nine-movement suite of three to four-minute "songs without words" - literally since they are taken from two previous voice-and-piano song cycles - which are named after nine of the Greek Muses. The cello sings with full-throated lyricism melodies which just keep on flowing... Dating from 1958, the ballet is based on a star-crossed lovers tale from 13th century Spain. Over half an hour in length, it necessarily forgoes Greek folk-song but is nevertheless chock-full of melody, drama and pictorial color; after hearing it and then reading that it has been used also as a film score, one is not surprised in the least.
